Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" is so outstanding among modern philosophical works, that it can be termed "the" foundation of modern philosophy. Schopenhauer termed it "the most important book ever to have been written in Europe." Otfried Höffe guides the reader through the "Critique" one step at a time, expounding Kant's thoughts, submitting them to an interpretation and drawing a summary conclusion, placing the work and its topics within the context of its modern successors. A "critical" interpretation of Kant's text reveals that he had something to say on many discussions that are said to have originated after his death. Reducing his argumentation to its central tenets, it can be made stronger and applicable to current problems. Kant's eventual concern, however, even when writing theoretical philosophy, lay with the practical. Elaborating this concern and its connection to Kant's theoretical philosophy is a prime tenet of this book.

"Biologie et connaissance" est un livre centré sur une seule problématique : comprendre l'adaptation du vivant en dépit de sa stabilité structurale, et cela tant au niveau de la psychologie cognitive qu'au niveau physiologique, phylogénétique et ontogénétique. En 1967, lors de sa première publication (Edition Gallimard), il fallait le lire pour les raisons qui étaient celles de Piaget lui-même. En 1992, il faut absolument le relire, parce qu'il est devenu l'un des témoignages les plus élaborés sur une pensée qui a dominé les sciences cognitives dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Un livre témoin donc, sur Piaget et sur l'esprit scientifique ! Ce livre rapproche, ordonne et compare des conceptions évolutionnistes et ontogénétiques complexes et tente d'en élucider les causalités profondes d'une façon très originale, on pourrait dire "sous le soleil" de l'interactionisme fondamental de Piaget. Sa solution au paradoxe de la stabilité des structures vivantes, qui sont cependant mouvantes en leur adaptation, passe par le concept des structures opérationnelles, par l'assimilation et l'adaptation par rééquilibration. Elle reste remarquable. L'effort de Piaget est aussi philosophique par son ambition mais jamais déconnecté du concret. Il est donc non seulement courageux mais profondément original et moderne en ce qu'il réalise une forte synthèse, qui n'est pas vraiment homogène à la biologie dominante des années 60 mais qui en révèle quelques contradictions et insuffisances aujourd'hui évidentes. Infinite regress arguments are part of a philosopher's tool kit of argumentation. But how sharp or strong is this tool? How effectively is it used? The typical presentation of infinite regress arguments throughout history is so succinct and has so many gaps that it is often unclear how an infinite regress is derived, and why an infinite regress is logically problematic, and as a result, it is often difficult to evaluate infinite regress arguments. These consequences of our customary way of using this tool indicate that there is a need for a theory to re-orient our practice. My general approach to contribute to such a theory, consists of collecting and evaluating as many infinite regress arguments as possible, comparing and contrasting many of the formal and non-formal properties, looking for recurring patterns, and identifying the properties that appeared essential to those patterns. Two very general questions guided this work: (1) How are infinite regresses generated in infinite regress arguments? (2) How do infinite regresses logically function as premises in an argument? In answering these questions I clarify the notion of an infinite regress; identify different logical forms of infinite regresses; describe different kinds of infinite regress arguments; distinguish the rhetoric from the logic in infinite regress arguments; and suggest ways of improving our discussion and our practice of constructing and evaluating these arguments.

Diese Aufsatzsammlung ist der erste ausführliche Versuch, eine Verbindung zwischen dem Denken der klassischen deutschen Philosophie und Husserls Phänomenologie herzustellen. Vorliegender Band versammelt eine Reihe neuer kritischer Artikel sowohl von etablierten Forschern wie jüngeren Philosophen aus beiden Traditionen, um diese Forschungslücke, als welche sie von beiderlei Forschungsrichtungen anerkannt ist, zu schließen. Dieser Band wirft neues Licht auf beide Traditionen und hebt ihre Bedeutung für die Philosophie der Gegenwart hervor, sowohl in historischer wie systematischer Hinsicht.   Die in diesem Band behandelten Hauptthemen sind Erkenntnistheorie, Moralphilosophie und die Geschichte der Philosophie, wobei diese Themen auf der Basis von mehreren Subthemen (Objekt, Idealismus/Realismus, Subjektivität/Intersubjektivität, Ethik, Geschichte, Kultur) diskutiert werden. Hierdurch wird das grundsätzliche Koordinatensystem für einen spekulativen Vergleich zwischen Husserl und der klassischen deutschen Philosophie präsentiert, indem die wichtigsten Deutungslinien verfolgt werden, um sowohl die Kontinuität wie auch die Diskontinuität beider Traditionen wertschätzen zu können. Eine Sektion des Bandes ist insbesondere der Rezeption der Husserl’schen Phänomenologie und der klassischen deutschen Philosophie gewidmet.   Die Aufsätze dieses Bandes sind für eine generelle philosophische Leserschaft intendiert mit besonderer Berücksichtigung von Forschern in den Gebieten der klassischen deutschen Philosophie (Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel), des Neukantianismus und der phänomenologischen Tradition (insbesondere Husserl, aber ebenso andere wichtige Vertreter derselben).
